PMW's Knights Valley property is in the process of being certified as a "Fish-Friendly Farming" operation, in order
to recognize the efforts taken to implement land management practices that restore and sustain fish habitat, particularly
for the federally listed endangered coho, the threatened chinook salmon and the steelhead trout in the Russian River and
other watersheds.
The Sotoyome Resource Conservation District administers the program in the Russian River Watershed. A number of other
agencies participate in the program, including the Regional Water Quality Control Board, California Department of Fish
& Game, National Marine Fisheries Service, Natural Resource Conservation Service, State Coastal Conservancy, and others.
The Fish Friendly Farming Certification Program is recognized by these regulatory agencies as consistent with the laws
and regulations that apply to growers. Completion of the program can lead to a certification of compliance.
The program requires farmers to establish a farm conservation plan for their property using best management practices
(BMPs) for soil conservation, slopes, chemical use, water conservation, erosion repairs, and an assessment and restoration
of creek and river riparian corridors.
