The 2002 growing season opened with a mild spring, followed by a cool summer, and then finished in the fall with several hot spells and warm nights with little to no fog in the mornings. Fortunately, the cooler temperatures and good air circulation afforded by the Les Pavots vineyard’s high mountain elevation provided relief from the extreme conditions prevalent at lower elevations. A great deal of attention was paid to the needs of the vines as we awaited maturity.
Patience was essential during harvest. Each block of the vineyard was selectively picked by hand only as it reached full physiological ripeness. Crop yield was a meager 2.2 tons per acre. The resulting concentrated fruit was challenging for the winemaking team, but also rewarding. A long and gentle fermentation period fostered development of a complex and intense bouquet, with a round and ‘gras’ mouthfeel. The 2002 vintage showcases the terroir of the Les Pavots vineyard with richness, complexity and balance.

Saturated ruby-purple color; a wonderfully complex bouquet of red cherry, blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry and raspberry jam, interspersed with nuances of cedar, tobacco, white chocolate and earthy notes (grey truffle and forest floor). The same ripe, rich fruit impressions follow through to the palate. In the mouth, the wine is creamy and round, with gorgeous velvet-like tannins and a long finish. The 2002 Les Pavots is ready for near term enjoyment and will age gracefully for at least a decade.
